Coastal Georgia Beauty

Richmond Hill is coastal Georgia life at its finest. The broad, winding Ogeechee River borders the city and wraps around narrow inlets.

Site of former southern rice plantations, which grew rice to feed the
Confederate Army, and cotton plantations Gen. Sherman and his land troops captured this strong-hold and looted and burned almost every plantation in the area. Then in 1887 a devastating hurricane wiped out the remaining dikes and equipment. The plantation owners moved away, leaving former slaves and their families to scratch out a meager living. Early in the 20th century nearly everyonelived in pverty and greater than half the population suffered with maleria.
In December of 1925, Henry and Clara Ford visited Richmond Hill (then called Ways Station) and selected the site of the former Richmond Plantation to build their magnificent dream home. Mr. Ford, the bilionaire industrialist, bought all available land from Hwy 17 to the Sound. His property was bordered with fifty miles of white fences decorated with what became the state flower, the Cherokee rose. Henry Ford provided health care, educational opportunities for many of the county's residents and he drained the swamps effectively eliminating malaria. The community officially adopted the name of Richmond Hill in 1941.
